Specializing in translation and the export
of the native Japanese dog breeds

» About Me

Shigeru Kato is a Japanese/Australian born in Kanagawa, Japan. With years of experience in Japanese-English translation and small business import/export, my passion is the Japanese Dog (Nihon Ken). I am involved in showing, breeding, and working the Nihon Ken, and have many contacts in the Nihon Ken breeder community. As a member of the Nihon Ken Hozonkai (Japanese Dog Preservation Society), the Kai Ken Aigokai (Kai Dog Protection Society), the Japan Kennel Club, the Akita Inu Hozonkai (Akita Dog Preservation Society), the Hokkaido Ken Hozonkai (Hokkaido Dog Preservation Society), and the Dainihon Hunter’s Association, my goal is to help preserve these magnificent dogs as stated in the original breed standards, with particular emphasis on preserving sound temperament and working ability.

Over the years I have received many requests to help find breeders that would be willing to send these rare dogs to overseas homes. Due to the large number of inquiries, I made the decision to offer this service as part of my business’ portfolio. Japan Dog Export was founded in the hope that I could help not only to ship Nihon Ken overseas, but also to inform, educate, and increase the popularity of these endangered breeds in Japan and worldwide. JDE is located in Chiba prefecture, Japan, and we ship to most destinations worldwide.

At JDE we offer Japanese-English written translation, running translation for interviews and meetings, personal guide/translator services, breeder introductions, worldwide canine shipping, and hopefully in the future, a Nihon Ken sperm bank.

Most people looking to import a pup from Japan cannot speak the language, and most breeders in Japan only speak Japanese. We offer a comprehensive service that connects you to the right breeder, the right pup, and we take care of all the communication, negotiations, vet work, paperwork and shipping arrangements. We take finding a pup to ship overseas very seriously, working in close concert with and receiving advice from breeders with decades of experience. We search for prospective pups from trusted breeders and healthy litters with sound temperaments and as few conformational flaws as possible.

Feel free to contact us for more information on importing Nihon Ken, and take a look at our blog for information on available pups.
